Duckworth Visits Farm on Ogden in Lawndale

[CHICAGO, IL] – U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today toured the Farm on Ogden, a joint project between the Chicago Botanic Garden and Lawndale Christian Health Center (LCHC), which is located in the Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Duckworth discussed the Farm’s work to provide job training, fresh produce, nutrition education and more to residents of the Lawndale neighborhood. Photos from the event are available here.

“Community gardens like the one I visited today in Lawndale allow underserved communities the opportunity to work side by side with their neighbors to cultivate their own fresh, healthy produce,” said Duckworth. “I’ll continue to support investments in community gardens because they are essential in promoting sustainability, conserving limited resources, combating hunger and encouraging community development.”

Duckworth supported the 2018 Senate Farm Bill that establishes a new urban agriculture research program with mandatory funding, requires USDA to update its farm policy to include urban and indoor farmers and creates a new soil testing and remediation program to help urban producers. In September 2017, Senator Duckworth introduced a resolution designating the last week of September as National Community Gardening Awareness Week to highlight the multifaceted benefits community gardens have on our local communities, environment and health.
