Duckworth Votes to Avert Another Harmful Trump Shutdown

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) issued the following statement after the Senate passed legislation to keep our government open and spare working families the pain of a shutdown, sending it to the President’s desk to be signed into law:

“With tonight’s vote, we’re avoiding yet another needless and harmful Trump government shutdown, supporting our farmers and delivering critical emergency disaster relief to help working Americans in red and blue states alike, including $2.3 billion in aid that Illinoisans struggling in the wake of natural disasters urgently need.

“I remain, however, deeply disappointed that—at the behest of an unelected billionaire—Republicans once again went back on their word and tanked their own government funding legislation earlier this week. As a result, we were not able to include my bipartisan bill to protect our children from being poisoned or pass my provision to allow the year-round sale of E15 gasoline nationwide—which my Republican colleague Senator Fischer and I have led the charge on for years because we both recognize how it would help lower gas prices, protect our farmers and drive economic opportunity throughout the Midwest. I will continue working to pass these important policies in the months ahead.

“After the last 48 hours of the same sort of needless chaos we grew accustomed to during the first Trump Administration, I’m relieved House Republicans finally remembered the only way to effectively govern is through compromise. I hope Speaker Johnson and MAGA Republicans take this lesson with them into the new year.”
