Duckworth Tours America’s Central Port in Granite City
[GRANITE CITY, IL] – U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) toured and met with the leadership of America’s Central Port, the center of the multi-modal freight transportation system in the country, yesterday and underscored the important role that the Port plays in creating jobs and expanding economic opportunity in the region. The Senator also discussed how investing in modern transportation can help grow Illinois’ economy. A photo of today’s meeting is available here.
“It was great to tour America’s Central Port and discuss how I can help support job creation and economic development in Granite City and throughout the Metro East,” Duckworth said. “I will continue working to secure investments that help us rebuild our state's infrastructure and give Illinois a competitive edge by getting products to market faster and cheaper."
Senator Duckworth serves on three committees with jurisdiction over infrastructure: the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works as well as the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. Duckworth is committed to improving the nation’s transportation systems and working to ensure that Illinois receives adequate funding from the federal government to rebuild and modernize the state’s infrastructure.
America’s Central Port offers a wide range of services including; barge, rail and truck commodity transfer; industrial commercial and residential development sites; and warehouse and commercial lease opportunities. In 2013, the Port released a study that showed its annual economic impact on the local economy was $282 million.
