Duckworth Says Final Goodbye to American Hero John McCain at the Capitol

Senator also announces support for bipartisan legislation to rename Senate building in McCain’s Honor

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) said her final goodbye to an American Hero, U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) today as he laid in state at the U.S. Capitol building. Duckworth first met McCain while he was visiting Wounded Warriors at Walter Reed, where she was recovering after her Black Hawk was shot down by an RPG in Iraq. Senator Duckworth also announced that she will support U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Jeff Flake’s (R-AZ) bipartisan legislation to rename the Russell Senate Office Building in honor of Senator McCain.

“I will forever treasure the privilege of working with John McCain in the Senate—even if it was only for a short time—and I will be forever grateful for the sacrifices he made in service to the greatest country the world has ever known,” Duckworth said. “I hope the heights he reached and the life he led can be a lesson to us all about the power of perseverance and the ability of every American to overcome any challenge and make our country a better place.”
