Duckworth Meets with Western Illinois University Leaders & Discusses College Affordability
MACOMB, IL - U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) met with Western Illinois University (WIU) leaders today to discuss college affordability issues and hear about how she can best serve WIU and its students as Illinois's newest Senator. Duckworth toured the campus and commended WIU for its designation as a "Best for Vets College." The school currently has 555 students who are Veterans or Servicemembers. "It was great to meet with the leadership of WIU today and to hear about how I can support the University and its surrounding community as Illinois's newest Senator," said Senator Duckworth. "I'm impressed by the excellent support the University's Veterans Resource Center provides those who served our nation and will do what I can to help every student and every Veteran receive an education that prepares them for a good career."
Duckworth has been a champion for Veterans and college affordability issues since she was first elected to Congress. As a Congresswoman, she introduced the In The Red Act, which would strengthen Pell Grants, allow students to refinance their debt at more affordable interest rates and make community college tuition-free for deserving students. She also introduced the Community College to Career Fund Act, which would create and expand workforce training partnership programs between colleges and employers to help students for jobs in high-demand industries, such as healthcare, advanced manufacturing, clean energy and information technology.
