Duckworth Meets with DOD Secretary Nominee Mark Esper

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Combat Veteran and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today met with Secretary of Defense Nominee Mark Esper in her office on Capitol Hill. Duckworth and Esper discussed the national security threats facing our nation and the need for the Trump Administration to prioritize investments in logistics infrastructure – and she urged Esper to support congressional efforts to replace our outdated Authorizations for the Use of Military Force (AUMFs). Photos of the meeting are available here and b-roll is available here.

“I appreciated the opportunity to meet with Mr. Esper and discuss how the Defense Department can better adjust to the national security threats facing our nation. Since the Trump Administration has recklessly escalated tensions with Iran, I made it clear to Mr. Esper that the Constitution gives Congress the sole and solemn responsibility to declare war,” said Duckworth. “I will always advocate for the brave men and women who volunteer to serve our nation in uniform and will continue to work in the Senate on behalf of our servicemembers and their families.”
