Duckworth Meets Communities for Responsible and Efficient Waterways Members to Discuss Federal Support
[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) met with Illinois members of Communities for Responsible and Efficient Waterways (CREW) to discuss federal support for projects along the Illinois Waterway and Illinois and Mississippi Canal that will maintain and improve access and mitigate flooding along the corridor. A photo from the meeting is available at the Senator’s website.
“Protecting and strengthening our inland waterways and water infrastructure is critical to growing our local economies and protecting the health and safety of our communities,” Duckworth said. “I’ll keep working to support this critical infrastructure that helps grow our local economies and creates jobs for Illinoisans every day.”
As co-founder of the U.S. Senate’s Environmental Justice Caucus, improving water infrastructure in Illinois and across the country has been one of Duckworth’s top priorities including flooding, inland waterways, locks and dams and ecosystem restoration. She has worked hard to secure numerous provisions and funding into the last several bi-annual Water Resources Development Acts (WRDA) and annual appropriations, with unprecedented funding levels for these priorities provided in President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, including support for the Navigation and Ecosystem Sustainability Program (NESP), Illinois locks and dams and Brandon Road. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law also included Senator Duckworth’s Drinking Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Act (DWWIA), the most significant federal investment in water infrastructure in history that includes $15 billion to replace lead service lines across the nation. Duckworth’s WRDA and DWWIA provisions focus on helping disadvantaged communities and rebuilding our nation’s crumbling water infrastructure, while creating jobs and growing our economy.
