Duckworth, Durbin Join Cortez Masto in Bipartisan Resolution Recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month Resolution
[WASHINGTON, DC] – U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) joined U.S. Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) and John Cornyn (R-TX) in introducing a bipartisan resolution to formally recognize Hispanic Heritage Month—which is celebrated from September 15 through October 15. The resolution successfully passed the Senate this week.
“Hispanic Heritage Month is a chance for us to come together to celebrate the leaders, change-makers and trailblazers of the Latino community throughout Illinois and our nation,” Duckworth said. “Their diversity makes us stronger—always.”
“I’m proud to join my Senate colleagues in celebrating the heritage and cultural traditions of the Hispanic and Latino community in Illinois and across the United States by cosponsoring and passing a resolution in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. Our state, and country, are made better by the contributions of these communities,” said Durbin.
The resolution recognizes the immense contributions of Latinos and Latinas to the economy, culture and identity of the United States. Hispanic Americans are the largest racial or ethnic minority group in the U.S., representing more than 65 million people—19.5 percent of the U.S. population—plus another 3.2 million in Puerto Rico. Thirteen states, including Illinois, have one million or more Latino and Latina residents.
