Duckworth, Durbin Announce Over $32 Million in Federal Funding for Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety

 

[CHICAGO, IL] -  U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) today announced $32,165,705 in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Safe Street and Roads for All grant program. This funding will go towards pedestrian, bike and transit infrastructure and safety measures including bike lanes, speed reduction tactics and intersection improvements.  

The DOT’s Safe Street and Roads for All program, established through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, funds regional, local and Tribal initiatives through grants to prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries.  

“I’m proud this federal funding will help repair and improve our infrastructure so that all pedestrians and cyclists across Illinois can travel safely,” Duckworth said. “This investment will go a long way in updating our roads, bike lanes and sidewalks— making them safer but also more accessible.”

“It’s time to bring an end to preventable tragedies on our roadways, bike lanes, and walkways,” said Durbin. “These investments will bolster pedestrian and cyclists' safety, reduce traffic incidents, and improve transit infrastructure.”  

Recipients of funding through DOT’s Safe Street and Roads for All include:  

  • North Avenue Corridor Improvements Project (Chicago, IL): $20,010,000 
  • Solving Problems with Projects: Building Safer Roads for the Residents of Danville and Vermilion County (Danville, IL): $9,999,900
  • City of Waukegan: Demonstration Activities for Safer Streets (Waukegan, IL): $254,365
  • The City of Harvey's Comprehensive Safety Action Plan (Harvey, IL): $200,000
  • U.S. 52 Route Safety Planning Study (Manhattan, IL): $100,000
  • Vison Zero Oak Park: Applying the Safe System Approach (Oak Park, IL): $1,126,880
  • Advancing Roadway Safety: A Comprehensive Plan for Our Community (Chatham, IL): $120,000
  • Winnebago County Highway Department – Safe Roadway & Work Zone Initiatives (Winnebago County, IL): $234,560
