Duckworth, Durbin Announce $15.2 Million In Upward Bound Grants for Educational Institutions

[SPRINGFIELD, IL]–U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) today announced that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded 46 grants, totaling $15,217,775, to Illinois educational institutions through the Upward Bound program. As one of the eight TRIO programs, Upward Bound aims to provide opportunities for high school students from low-income families and families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree to succeed academically and ultimately graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

“Those of us who weren’t always sure we’d be able to go to college or faced barriers upon entry understand the power of a diploma,” Duckworth said. “I’m proud that organizations like Upward Bound are working to help more of Illinois’s high school students from working families have an opportunity to achieve academic success and complete a degree.

“Federal support for educational programs like Upward Bound is critical to ensure that disadvantaged students can graduate high school and college so they can compete in today’s competitive global workforce,” said Durbin. “Today’s investment in students will help Illinoisans better prepare for their future careers.”
