Duckworth, Durbin Announce $14.9 Million to Install Electric Vehicle Chargers Across 273 Locations in Illinois

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) today announced $14,962,506 has been awarded to Illinois through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Grant Program (CFI Program) to install community charging sites to fill gaps in access to electric vehicle charging infrastructure across 273 locations.

“Expanding access to reliable charging stations for electric vehicles that help lower fuel costs and reduce emissions across our state is a crucial infrastructure investment,” said Duckworth. “I’m glad that this funding will prioritize equity by helping make EV charging sites more accessible to all Illinoisans—no matter if they live in an urban area or a rural community.”

“By expanding access to electric vehicle chargers, we are weaving a network that connects urban and rural areas alike, ensuring that every community, regardless of its geographical or socioeconomic standing, has the tools to embrace the electric vehicle revolution,” said Durbin. “This investment is a key step in breaking down barriers to entry for disadvantaged communities, offering them a ticket to the future of transportation.”

Established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which Duckworth and Durbin both supported, the CFI Program strategically deploys publicly accessible electric vehicle charging and alternative fueling infrastructure in the places people live and work. Illinois will install 845 new charging stations and 36 fast charging stations across 273 locations statewide using CFI Program funding.
