Duckworth, Durbin Announce $11 Million in Federal Funding for Multiuse Cycling Trail in Energy, Illinois
[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded $11.145 million in federal funding to the Crab Orchard Greenway Multimodal Network at Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge. The grant, funded through the Fiscal Year 2023 National Significant Federal Lands and Tribal Projects Program, will go toward supporting the construction of 12 miles of a multiuse cycling trail near Energy, Illinois.
“I’m proud that the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law continues to support and benefit Illinoisans by not only repairing and enhancing our infrastructure, but also by supporting community engagement, equity and access to nature,” Duckworth said. “This federal funding to construct a new multi-use cycling trail will allow Southern Illinois residents and visitors better access to explore Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge for years to come.”
“I can think of no better way to enjoy the natural beauty of Southern Illinois than by viewing it on a leisurely bike ride. I’m happy to see the federal government make such a significant investment in making our state’s natural landscapes more accessible by providing funding for miles of multiuse cycling trails,” said Durbin.
