Each year, the Architect of the Capitol fulfills on average more than 100,000 requests from Members of Congress to fly flags over the U.S. CapitolThis link opens in new window or tab. This link opens in new window or tab. This link opens in new window or tab. This link opens in new window or tab.. Flags are flown on special flag poles, and after being flown, each flag is issued a keepsake Certificate of Authenticity by the Architect of the Capitol.

To submit a request through my office, please complete a flag order online or by mail by clicking on the respective buttons below. Flag requests must be submitted no later than one week from your requested fly date, and no sooner than 6 weeks before your requested fly date. Flags are flown daily year-round, weather permitting, excluding Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why can’t I select a specific date for my flag to be flown over the Capitol?
    • This is most likely because you have selected a pre-flown flag from the dropdown menu. Pre-flown flags have already been flown over the Capitol and are available for constituents who do not have a specific date they want their flag flown. To select a specific date, select a regular flag from the dropdown menu and the form will then prompt you for a specific date.
  • How long does it take to receive the flag?
    • Due to the large number of requests that the Architect of the Capitol receives, it can take a while for your flag to be delivered to you. For a pre-flown flag or a flag that is not flown over the Capitol, expect it to take 1-2 weeks to get to you. For a flag flown on a specific future date, please allow 1-2 weeks from your requested fly date to receive the flag. If it is taking longer than expected, please contact our office and we will follow up on your request.
  • What is the difference between the “Flown For” and “Occasion” fields on the order form?
    • The “Flown For” field is for the name of the person that the flag is being flown in honor of. The text entered here will appear as the name on the certificate that will accompany the flag. Because of this, please limit the number of characters in the field to a maximum of 35. The “Occasion” field is why the person is having a flag flown for them. Some common examples are “Achievement of the Rank of Eagle Scout,” “Completion of the Gold Award,” “Celebration of their 60th Birthday,” “Retirement from the United States Air Force,” “Graduation from the University of Illinois,” etc.
